START WITH WHY WE OC ANYTHING: ALL MANUFACTURERS
BUILD THEIR CHIPS TO SPECIFICATIONS THAT MUST BE
MET, SO THEY MAKE A BATCH OF 400MHZ CPU'S AND
THEN TEST THEM LETS SAY PII'S AND THEY TEST THEM
AT 400MHZ BUT THERE NOT QUITE STABLE, SO THEY GO
DOWN TO 350MHZ BUT THERE MAY BE MINOR QUIRKS
STILL SO THEY TEST IT AT 300MHZ AND IT RUN'S
STABLE AT 300MHZ AND IT GETS A STAMP. THEY ALSO
BUFFER THERE CPU'S AND THAT LEAVES MORE ROOM FOR
OVERCLOCKING. JUST BECAUSE A CPU HAS A RATING
DOESNT MEAN THAT IT CANT RUN HIGHER, IT JUST
MEANS THAT THE MANUFACTURER WILL ONLY GIVE A
WARRANTY AT A CERTAIN MHZ RATING! TO OVERCLOCK TO
THE EXTREMES YOU WILL HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR VOLTAGE
ON YOUR MOTHERBOARD TO A SLIGHTLY HIGHER ONE. THE
REASON FOR THIS IS THAT THEY REQUIRE MORE POWER
AND THIS WILL ALSO SHORTEN THE LIFE OF THE CPU,
BUT WITH GOOD COOLING WERE TALKING 5 YEARS BEFORE
CPU MIGRATION OCCURS. ALSO OVERCLOCKING CPU'S
LIKE A CELERY 266A WILL NOT GIVE YOU MUCH BENIFIT
AS IT IS A VERY SLOW PROCESSOR AND WILL BE BEATEN
BY LOWER MHZ CPU'S THAT HAVE CACHE ON THEM. IN
THE SAME LIGHT CYRIX AND IBM CPU'S ARE BASICALLY
NO NO'S IN THE OC WORLD AS I HAVE SEEN TO MANY
EARLY DEATHS OF THESE PROCESSORS TO RECOMMEND
OVERCLOCKING THEM, BUT YOU CAN TRY IT AND YOU MAY
GET LUCKY.
THE
TABLES BELOW INDICATE WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT OUT
OF YOUR PROCESSOR USING A STANDARD CONFIGURATION
WITH SOME THERMAL PASTE. BY CHANGING YOUR JUMPERS
ON YOUR MOTHERBOARD OR USING CPU SOFT MENU
THROUGH BIOS, THE THINGS YOU ARE LOOKING FOR ARE
MULTIPLIER AND BUS SPEEDS AND VOLTAGE SETTINGS.
REMEMBER TO REFER TO YOUR MOTHERBOARD MANUAL FOR WHERE THESE SETTINGS
ARE AS ALL MOTHERBOARDS ARE CREATED DIFFERENT. REMEMBER THAT
THE HIGHER YOUR PROCESSOR IS PUSHED THE MORE
POWER IT WILL REQUIRE SO CHANGE THE VOLTAGE
SETTING, AGAIN REFER TO YOUR MANUAL FOR THE
SETTING LOCATIONS. ALSO REMEMBER THAT YOUR RAM
WILL PLAY A FACTOR IN IT AS WELL, IF YOU HAVE
66MHZ SDRAM THAN IT WILL GO NO HIGHER THAN 83.3
MHZ, IF YOU HAVE 100MHZ SDRAM THAN IT WILL LIKELY
HIT 115MHZ BUT RARELY HIT 125MHZ, IF YOU WANT A
HIGHER BUS THAN THIS THAN LOOK TOWARDS BUYING
SOME 133MHZ SDRAM. YOU CAN ALSO SET YOUR RAM TO
CAS 3 IN THE CMOS MENU WHICH WILL ALLOW YOU TO
CLOCK IT HIGHER IF IT WONT DO IT ON CAS 2, YOU
SET THIS IN THE BIOS.
FOR AN EXAMPLE:
YOU HAVE A CELERON, YOU WANT TO OC IT,
LOOK FOR THE BUS SPEEDS ON YOUR
MOTHERBOARD 66MHZ 75MHZ 83.3MHZ 100MHZ,
NOW CHANGE THE JUMPER FROM 66MHZ TO 75 OR
83.3MHZ AND SEE WHAT YOU GET.
FOR
K6-2 OWNERS YOU COULD FIRST TRY THE
MULTIPLIER SETTINGS, IF IT WAS A 350MHZ
VERSION THEN THE MULTIPLER WOULD BE AT
3.5x, IF IT WAS A 500MHZ VERSION IT WOULD
BE SET AT 5.Ox, NOW YOU WOULD LOOK FOR
THE MULTIPLIER ON YOUR MOTHERBOARD AND GO
UP ONE NOTCH AND RESET THE COMPUTER AND
SEE IF IT WORKS.
FOR
ATHLON OWNERS YOU NEED TO PURCHASE A
SPECIAL PCB BOARD THAT GOES ON TOP OF
YOUR PROCESSOR AND THIS WILL HAVE DIP
SWITCHES THAT ALLOW YOU TO CHANGE
MULTIPLIER, BUS AND VOLTAGE SETTINGS.

AND P3 USERS HAVE THE SETTINGS EITHER ON
THE MOTHERBOARD OR IN CPU SOFT MENU, YOU
CAN ONLY CHANGE THE BUS SPEEDS BECAUSE
INTEL LOCKED YOUR PROCESSORS. OWNERS OF
THE 133MHZ BUS P3'S WILL HAVE A HARD TIME
OVERCLOCKING THEM AS YOUR RAM WONT GO
MUCH HIGHER THAN 133MHZ EVEN ON CAS 3. SO
ONLY SLIGHT GAINS ARE TO BE HAD WITH
THESE PROCESSORS.

K6-2'S WILL GENERALLY
OC 50MHZ TO GET HIGHER YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR
VOLTAGE. ON 66MHZ VERSIONS TRY FOR A 100MHZ BUS.
DONT OVER DO IT WITH THE VOLTAGE OR YOU WILL FRY YOUR CPU. THE
NEWER SHARPTOOTH CORE IS EVEN BETTER FOR
OVERCLOCKING AND IT RUNS AT A LOWER VOLTAGE TOO
WHICH WILL MAKE IT COOLER, SOME 450'S AND THE
500'S AND 550'S HAVE THIS NEWER CORE, THE 450'S
HAVE A 2.2V CORE AND THE OLD ONES HAVE A 2.4V
CORE. TRY NOT TO EXCEED 3V UNLESS YOU RUN A
PELTIER, I FRIED ONE OF THESE RUNNING IT AT 3.3V
BUT PEOPLE RUN THEM AT 3.5V WITH A PELTIER NO
PROBS. THE BEST I HAVE HEARD OF IS A 350MHZ
VERSION RUNNING AT 650 WITH WATER COOLED HEATSINK
AT 3.5V AND HE HAD IT RUNNING IN TO A CAR
RADIATOR. INSANE STUFF. OVERCLOCKING YOUR BUS
SPEED ON A K6-2 WILL YEILD A BETTER RESULT THAN
JUST CPU SPEED SO IF YOU HAVE A HIGHER BUS THAN
100MHZ ON YOUR MOTHERBOARD, LIKE 112MHZ THAN TRY
IT, YOU WILL DEFINETELY SEE A BETTER BENCHMARK
SCORE THIS WAY BUT YOUR RAM HAS TO BE ABLE TO
TAKE IT. IF IT CANT THEN SET IT TO CAS 3 IN THE
BIOS.
